In Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN), an embodied agent needs to reach a target destination with the only guidance of a natural language instruction. To explore the environment and progress towards the target location, the agent must perform a series of low-level actions, such as rotate, before stepping ahead. In this paper, we propose to exploit dynamic convolutional filters to encode the visual information and the lingual description in an efficient way. Differently from some previous works that abstract from the agent perspective and use high-level navigation spaces, we design a policy which decodes the information provided by dynamic convolution into a series of low-level, agent friendly actions. Results show that our model exploiting dynamic filters performs better than other architectures with traditional convolution, being the new state of the art for embodied VLN in the low-level action space. Additionally, we attempt to categorize recent work on VLN depending on their architectural choices and distinguish two main groups: we call them low-level actions and high-level actions models. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose this analysis and categorization for VLN.

Computational visual attention is a hot topic in computer vision. However, most efforts are devoted to model saliency, whilst the actual eye guidance problem, which brings into play the sequence of gaze shifts characterising overt attention, is overlooked. Further, in those cases where the generation of gaze behaviour is considered, stimuli of interest are by and large static (still images) rather than dynamic ones (videos). Under such circumstances, the work described in this note has a twofold aim: (i) addressing the problem of estimating and generating visual scan paths, that is the sequences of gaze shifts over videos; (ii) investigating the effectiveness in scan path generation offered by features dynamically learned on the base of human observers attention dynamics as opposed to bottom-up derived features. To such end a probabilistic model is proposed. By using a publicly available dataset, our approach is compared against a model of scan path simulation that does not rely on a learning step.

In this paper we propose a strategy to optimize the performance of thinning algorithms. This solution is obtained by combining three proven strategies for binary images neighborhood exploration, namely modeling the problem with an optimal decision tree, reusing pixels from the previous step of the algorithm, and reducing the code footprint by means of Directed Rooted Acyclic Graphs. A complete and open-source benchmarking suite is also provided. Experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithms clearly outperform classical implementations.

Batch Normalization (BN) is a common technique used to speed-up and stabilize training. On the other hand, the learnable parameters of BN are commonly used in conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) for representing class-specific information using conditional Batch Normalization (cBN). In this paper we propose to generalize both BN and cBN using a Whitening and Coloring based batch normalization. We show that our conditional Coloring can represent categorical conditioning information which largely helps the cGAN qualitative results. Moreover, we show that full-feature whitening is important in a general GAN scenario in which the training process is known to be highly unstable. We test our approach on different datasets and using different GAN networks and training protocols, showing a consistent improvement in all the tested frameworks. Our CIFAR-10 conditioned results are higher than all previous works on this dataset.

A classifier trained on a dataset seldom works on other datasets obtained under different conditions due to domain shift. This problem is commonly addressed by domain adaptation methods. In this work we introduce a novel deep learning framework which unifies different paradigms in unsupervised domain adaptation. Specifically, we propose domain alignment layers which implement feature whitening for the purpose of matching source and target feature distributions. Additionally, we leverage the unlabeled target data by proposing the Min-Entropy Consensus loss, which regularizes training while avoiding the adoption of many user-defined hyper-parameters. We report results on publicly available datasets, considering both digit classification and object recognition tasks. We show that, in most of our experiments, our approach improves upon previous methods, setting new state-of-the-art performances.

This paper presents a novel strategy to perform skin lesion segmentation from dermoscopic images. We design an effective segmentation pipeline, and explore several pre-training methods to initialize the features extractor, highlighting how different procedures lead the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to focus on different features. An encoder-decoder segmentation CNN is employed to take advantage of each pre-trained features extractor. Experimental results reveal how multiple initialization strategies can be exploited, by means of an ensemble method, to obtain state-of-the-art skin lesion segmentation accuracy.

We present a probabilistic generative model for tracking by prediction the dynamics of affective spacial expressions in videos. The model relies on Bayesian filter sampling of facial landmarks conditioned on motor action parameter dynamics; namely, trajectories shaped by an autoregressive Gaussian Process Latent Variable state-space. The analysis-by-synthesis approach at the heart of the model allows for both inference and generation of affective expressions. Robustness of the method to occlusions and degradation of video quality has been assessed on a publicly available dataset.
